What is Potential Energy ?
Potential energy is the energy stored in the body when it is on rest. Potential energy depends on the mass, gravity and height of the object from the earth surface.
let’s understand this with an example
There are two friends Jack and Jill. Both of them are having a mass of 64 Kg They are leaving in a building having 10 floors. Jack lives on the third floor and Jill leaves on the sixth what do you think whose potential energy is high?
As we discussed earlier that potential energy depends on the mass, gravity and height of the object from the ground surface, Jack and Jill have same mass of 64Kg so we can not decide on the basis of mass that whose potential tial energy is high. Both are on earth and living at the same place so the gravity will be same. Now the only factor that can decide whose potential energy is high is height.
Jack is living on the third floor and Jill is living on the sixth floor so the Jill’s height is more then jack’s height from the earth surface. So the potential energy of Jill will be high.
Now we will try to solve this with the help of formula for better understanding.
Formula of Potential Energy
The formula of potential energy can be given as
P = mgh
P= potential energy stored in an object,
m= mass of an object
g= gravitational force
h= height of the object from the ground
let’s solve the above problem with the help of formula.
Jack’s Potential Energy:
Mass of Jack is 64Kg so m = 64Kg
Gravity applied on the earth is g = 9.8m/s2
Suppose 1 floor’s height is 3 m so 3 floors height will be 9m
so h= 9m
now P = m x g x h
so P = 64 x 9.8 x 9
P = 5644.8 J
here J is for Joule. unit of Potential Energy is Joule.
Similarly we will count the potential energy of Jill
P = m x g x h
P = 64 x 9.8 x 18
P = 11289.6 J
We can see that Potential Energy of Jill is high.

Kinetic Energy is the energy stored in the body when it is in motion. Kinetic energy depends on Mass and Velocity.

The formula of Kinetic energy is stated below
K.E. = 1/2 m v2
Where K.E = Kinetic Energy
m = Mass of the body Kg
v = Velocity of the body in m/s
